When the Vietnam war ended, there were many Americans lost, treaties broken, and much trust lost. Back in America, there was the hippie movement. Part of the war in America was the battle between peace and war. As the so called peaceful hippies were set out to change the world as they though, they brought many ideas into the minds of Americans. The better question is what caused the formation of such radical ideas. While the peace movement continued, black rights continud to grow. Though still not equal rights, many more Jim Crow Laws were abolished.
While 1970 brought about an interesting decade for politicians, things back in Vietnam still remained unresolved. Though the war was over, there were still many other battles that had been brought about from the war. The people of Vietnam were still angry with all that had happened. Just as many Americans had wanted, they got their peace, and when they did they still were not completely happy. Many Americans felt that this was the most useless war. Like the current war in the Middle-East, Vietnam had overstayed its welcome to the attention of average Americans. While America was experiencing a bit of Communism in the peace movement, the Vietnamese world was transformed into a communist society.
South Vietnam was overthrown by the North. The work efforts by the united States did not seem to have the lasting effect it was meant to have as there was not much left behind. When the United States made their withdraw, they left very little if anything to help maintain and further establish the South Vietnamese states. The battles of Cambodia moved turned into a war between China and Vietnam. During this time in 1973, the Democratic side of America had decided to not put any force into this Cambodia-China Vietnamese tension.
It was almost as if America was so peaceful they did not care. However, what Americans did seem to care about was their rights. Cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York were very outspoken. College students burst with violent rallies and movements. The one man who had looked for peaceful movement and more of a diplomatic approach with peaceful examples had been killed in 1968. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the trademark of peaceful civil right movements. While constitutionally Americans had the freedom of speech and the right to form peacefully, the Communist world was not so.
The communist was a much more controlled and restricted society. Individuals did not hold the right to freedom. There were restrictions to what people could own and think. The result of this was the formation of the black market. The black market brought about similar experiences that the hidden bars did during the early 1900 prohibition era. It was an opportunity for people to get what they wanted without having to let everyone know they were getting it. Though this was similar to the prohibition in America, the consequences of getting caught were far worse and could have consequences on the whole society.
