The Life of a Patrician
Imagine living in the worlds most powerful empires, having the best of everything from food to clothes, imagine living in Rome. As a whole, Rome was one of the most wealth empires during ancient times. To be a Roman was to be mighty and powerful. During the time of the Roman Empire the whole world saw Rome to be the place to live. In a way it was like living near or on beach front property today.
Others countries saw all citizens of Rome more powerfully then themselves, and gave much respect. This was because other countries know that if they were to attack a single roman then it would be like attacking all of Rome, and themselves because the Romans would come back twice as hard. This idea would later become important in the success of the Roman Empire. Due to the fact that the Romans received a lot of respect, man people wanted to become a Roman citizen. Once a person became a Roman citizen they would be under protection of the Roman government and army. One way that a non-Roman person could become a citizen of Rome would be if their country was taken captive and conquered by the Romans. Strange enough, not all of the defeated countries would have their people taken and used for slaves. The Romans decided to make the defeated people partial Roman citizens. By doing this the Romans were able to help maintain peace through the whole empire because the new Roman citizens would be satisfied with the fact of being Roman.
Daily life in Rome was very similar to our daily life, in a way where the ideas, actions, social classes, and laws can be related. Within the Roman Empire there were three main social classes. These classes were the patricians, the equites, and the plebeians. In simpler terms there were rich citizens, businessmen, and commoners. The social status of a Roman would deeply depend on the social status of each person’s early descendants of Rome. If a Roman citizen were to have descendants who owned lots of land or were political leaders they themselves would most likely become a patrician. If their descendants were Calvary officers they would probably be businessmen; but most were descendants of poor traders or farmers and were Roman commoners. (Marks 10)
What did they wear?
Most Roman citizens of early Rome wore plain white togas. How ever the toga quickly went out of style and was replaced by the tunic. One of the reasons for the toga going out of style was because of the fact that it was not very practical during that time. Other reasons included things like the toga not being the warmest thing to wear when it was cold. At one point the Roman emperors also had to enforce, and create a rule in order to get all of the Senators to wear a toga.
After the toga went out of style and was replaced by the tunic not many people complained about having to wear a certain clothes because the tunic was well liked by many people. The main reason for it being well liked was because it was very comfortable when it was cold or hot. It was warmer than wearing a toga during the winter because it was a little thicker. But at the same time the material was very light and kept cool even in the heat. Unlike the toga, the tunic was made to be worn as something that is not too hot during the summer, but warm enough during the cold winter. (Class)
